FROM HOMEWORK CLUBS TO COMMUNITY TRANSPORT – THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN CEFN GOLAU

Vicki Browning from Cefn Golau Together -  the Invest Local Group in Cefn Golau, Tredegar – tells us about the latest developments from the project in her area.

We’ve been working as a group for over a year, running events and talking to the local community about how they would like to spend the Invest Local £1million.

At our AGM in November we decided that we had enough feedback from the community to start our action planning – taking the themes that the community said they’d like to work on, and coming up with potential project ideas. We’re really excited to be starting our planning this month.

So far, there are some really strong themes emerging. We’re looking to develop the community house and see more going on there. We’re aiming to improve the IT facilities there for residents to access. There will also be agencies regularly available to help with employment and skills. We have also discussed the possibility of running homework clubs there.

We would like to improve the sports area that we have next to our play area, so that youth teams can safely run programmes there, and provide a range of activities for the young people in the area. We will be working with the young people, as well as relevant agencies, to ensure that the project is fit for purpose.

We’ve also arranged a visit from an amazing mobile youth work team in South Wales, who’ll hopefully give us some amazing ideas and inspiration.

Finally, we’re planning on running a community transport scheme, and we’ll be having lots more conversations with local people about what they need from this service.

This is only the start of our plans for the future of Cefn Golau. Once we’ve got the projects ideas fully formed, we’ll present them to local people – and the community will get a final say on if they do want the projects to go ahead.
