News Review of the year

Invest Local groups have been working hard throughout the year to deliver sustainable change and tangible growth in their communities.

In this post, we highlight some of the brilliant projects and incredible work that Invest local groups have been engaged in and that have gained amazing recognition and attracted the attention of local news coverage in 2022.

Hubberston and Hakin, securing a home for sport and planning big sustainable changes.

In 2022 Invest Local Hubberston and Hakin have spent their time and resources wisely focusing on ways to empower their community with spaces to give a home to community enrichment, connection, and wellbeing.

The year started with having a hand in helping to support Hakin United in securing the observatory field ensuring a space for sport is kept at the heart of the community for future generations. More recently, they have submitted an ambitious planning application to Pembrokeshire County Council for the potential regeneration of the former Gelliswick caravan park area of Milford Haven, a project that if approved, would initially be designed to create extra camping and parking facilities in the space, but that in later stages of the project would produce woodland walks, areas for sports activities, workshops and coffee shops, and a resource centre for local organizations and schools to use.

It's fair to say that Invest Local Hubberston and Hakin haven’t wasted any time in tackling the issues raised by their driving change plan. They are being proactive in thinking big in their approach towards building on the positive potential their community holds.

MaesNi builds positive connections and host reconnection day.

MaesNi has spent the year acquiring valuable resources for the community, hosting activities and events to help rebuild lost connections due to the Covid pandemic and establishing strong campaigns designed to attract further investment in their community youth support projects.

In a year where so many of us have been relieved to finally be able to reconnect with our fellow residents, friends, and loved ones in person, MaesNi brought focus to this by hosting Maes G Showcase (G Connect) at the start of the summer season.

Hosted as part of the wider ‘Reconnection Tour’  created as a partnership between Community Organisations and Engage Britian that was touring the UK through May and June. The day was a celebration of community reconnection and a chance for MaesNi to take the opportunity to re-engage the wider public with the projects of regeneration of the Estate that they have been working on as part of their involvement with the invest Local project.

Alongside this, MaesNi set to work drawing attention to the importance of their youth engagement work and the compelling need for further investment in the estate in supporting youth projects through the call for funds to be established to create a full-time youth worker position for the estate. If MaesNi is successful in securing funds for a full-time youth worker for the estate, it would cement their work on youth projects and provide more opportunities for future generations.

Plas Madoc wins recognition for work and focuses on providing support and a voice to residents affected by current issues.

For We Are Plas Madoc it has been a year of addressing pressing issues and celebrating great achievements.

September 30th saw We Are Plas Madoc drawing their focus onto empowering their residents and volunteers with a voice and vital resource information to help them navigate any crisis experienced as a result of the impact of the Cost of Living increases.

The community pulled together to host a Cost of Living Summit, which acted as a key communication day on the resources that would be available to residents. It also created a starting point for the discussion to continue around the support that will be needed for hard-hit communities and vulnerable groups in the future in light of sharply rising costs.

Looking back, Summer 2022 kicked off with a well-deserved win and important recognition for We Are Plas Madoc. In June the community group was invited to the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner’s Community Awards Ceremony, they won the category Partnership Award taking home the Rehabilitation Award. A win that will no doubt sit amongst their proudest achievements marking the group out as an organization that’s making huge improvements to the lives of the estate’s residents.
